Let Us Unite For Good to END POLIO NOW!
Guest Speaker: Andrew Stein, Deputy Director of Polio Program's Outbreak Teams with the Gates Foundation
Plan for this to be the meeting for the Club for the week and Presidents, please bring your bell to ring. We encourage all Bequest Society Members, Major Donors, White Hat Society Members and Arch Klump Society Members to wear your pins and you will be admitted to the VIP reception that will be in the Main Hall beginning at 5:30 PM. If you aspire to join the ranks of these amazing donors that support Rotary at the highest levels you can come into the main hall to observe quietly as we recognize the true heart and soul of what funds all of the good that we do.
We will have an actual iron lung on hand and the speakers will be Andrew Stein from the Gates Foundation to share his knowledge on how we End Polio and also a taped interview with the last living iron lung user.

The Rotary Club of Houston is partnering with KIPP Academy for the Dictionary Project. Ten Rotarians are needed to volunteer. The Dictionary Project is a literacy initiative that provides age-appropriate dictionaries to third grade students, helping strengthen reading, writing, and vocabulary skills at a critical stage of learning. Rotarians meet with the students, talk about the importance of reading and learning new words, and explain how to use a dictionary as a helpful tool at school and at home. The visit creates excitement around reading, gives students a sense of pride in owning a book of their own, and leaves a lasting impression of community members investing in their education and success.

The State of Immigration and Displacement in the U.S. and Worldwide
Dr. Kelsey Norman is a Fellow and Director of the Women’s Rights, Human Rights & Refugees program at the Edward P. Djerejian Center for the Middle East at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy. Her research and teaching focus on the politics of migration and refugee hosting in the Middle East and North Africa, as well as globally. Her first book, Reluctant Reception: Migration, Refugees and Governance in the Middle East and North Africa, was published in 2021 by Cambridge University Press. The book was selected as one of Choice's Outstanding Titles for 2021 and was awarded an honorable mention by the American Political Science Association's Migration and Citizenship 2021 Best Book Committee. Her second book, Aiding Autocrats: Migration Management, Governance, and Repression in Africa, co-authored with Dr. Nicholas Micinski, is forthcoming with Cambridge University Press in 2026. Her writing for popular media outlets has been published by The Washington Post, Foreign Policy, Foreign Affairs, The Conversation and The Atlantic.

John Whitmire, the 63rd Mayor of Houston was sworn in on January 1, 2024, bringing decades of public service experience to the role. Before becoming mayor, he served as the longest-tenured member of the Texas State Senate, representing Houstonians for 40 years in the Texas Senate and 10 years in the Texas House. Throughout his career, Whitmire has been a strong advocate for criminal justice reform, public safety, and economic development. As mayor, Whitmire is focused on strengthening public safety, fixing the city’s finances and infrastructure, and improving Houstonians' quality of life. His leadership is shaped by his love for people, his vast understanding of government and his commitment to public service. |
